Alshar: North Macedonia’s First AI-Powered Humanoid DJ Debuts in Ohrid
In a remarkable milestone for both technology and entertainment, Professor Dr. Anis Sefidanis has unveiled Alshar, North Macedonia’s first humanoid DJ robot. The debut took place during the celebration of the country’s Independence Day in the popular Rebel Club in Ohrid, marking a fusion of artificial intelligence, robotics, and cultural expression in the region.
Alshar is not merely a robot with pre-programmed music tracks; it is a humanoid designed to interact naturally with its surroundings and audiences. Constructed from metal and high-quality plastics, the robot incorporates advanced technologies including 3D printing and CNC machining. Its human-like appearance is complemented by a bespoke outfit designed by Ana Mitreska, a graduate fashion designer, who created a symbolic collection called “For Humans and Robots,” emphasizing the integration of robotics into cultural life.
Equipped with six computers and a powerful Nvidia supercomputer costing approximately $150,000, Alshar can generate original music compositions using artificial intelligence. Its debut set included contemporary electronic tracks blended with traditional Macedonian music. During the performance, Alshar showcased its first original composition, “Lorandit”, which features an electronic instrumental paired with the lyrics of Bojana Skenderovski’s song “Zavetna”, alongside tracks by the Macedonian music collective PMG.
Professor Sefidanis, who heads the Sefidanis Research and Development Center, explained that Alshar was developed not only as a technological achievement but also as a social and cultural innovation. Its anthropomorphic design allows it to emulate human cognitive and physical capabilities, creating an interactive experience where the robot can collaborate with humans in everyday and entertainment settings. “Ohrid is a tourist city, so we wanted to focus on enhancing the cultural and entertainment offering,” Sefidanis stated, emphasizing that the robot is intended to integrate into local cultural life and tourism.
The investment in Alshar extends beyond hardware. Over $100,000 was spent on additional development, including software, sensors, and design components. The project reflects a multidisciplinary collaboration involving engineers, designers, and AI specialists, highlighting the region’s growing capabilities in high-tech innovation.
Alshar’s successful debut has drawn attention internationally, offering a glimpse into the future of AI-assisted entertainment. As the first humanoid DJ in the Balkans, it represents the potential for intelligent systems to complement human creativity and transform cultural experiences in both local and global contexts.
