Alshar: The Humanoid DJ Robot Transforming Entertainment and AI Innovation in North Macedonia

In an extraordinary blend of technology, creativity, and culture, Professor Dr. Anis Sefidanis unveiled Alshar, North Macedonia’s first humanoid DJ robot, capturing the attention of both local audiences and the international tech community. The debut took place in Ohrid on September 8, 2024, during a special event celebrating the nation’s Independence Day, symbolizing the convergence of tradition and innovation in the heart of the Balkans.

Alshar is far more than a novelty; it is a sophisticated autonomous system designed to perform music while interacting naturally with its audience. The humanoid robot incorporates a synergy of open-source and proprietary technologies, including TensorFlow frameworks and generative AI models combining supervised and unsupervised machine learning paradigms. It can predict audience preferences and adapt music in real time, creating dynamic, immersive entertainment experiences that reflect both human taste and cultural nuances.

The robot’s mechanical design demonstrates meticulous engineering. Its torso, head, and arms were inspired by the Inmoov open-source model created by French sculptor Gael Langevin, while its “wings” were crafted by Macedonian designer Zoran Kardula. The entire mechatronic system operates via Arduino and Raspberry Pi technologies, ensuring seamless coordination between movement and music. Alshar’s clothing is part of the first Macedonian fashion collection designed specifically “for humans and robots,” by designer Ana Mitreska, further highlighting the project’s interdisciplinary nature.

The development of Alshar was a monumental collaborative effort. It brought together engineers, designers, radio professionals, students from the University of Information Science and Technology “St. Paul the Apostle,” pupils from the St. Clement of Ohrid Gymnasium, and international Erasmus+ students from countries including France, Malta, Ukraine, Latvia, Romania, and Poland. This extensive collaboration reflects the merging of education, innovation, and cultural engagement, setting a precedent for future AI-driven projects in the region.

During its debut performance, Alshar demonstrated its remarkable ability to handle DJ equipment autonomously, using sliders, knobs, and various controls just like a professional human DJ. The robot performed both original compositions and contemporary electronic music, generating real-time mixes that engaged and energized the audience. Professor Sefidanis emphasized that Alshar is part of a broader vision: a series of intelligent systems developed under the Sefidanis R&D Center in the field of digital humanities, including the “Smart Monument of Prlichev” and the “Monument of the Future,” which aim to merge technology with cultural heritage.

Alshar exemplifies the promise of the fourth industrial revolution, where artificial intelligence and robotics are integrated into everyday life, including entertainment, tourism, and cultural experiences. By blending AI-generated music, human-like gestures, and interactive capabilities, Alshar not only elevates nightlife experiences in Ohrid but also demonstrates the potential for AI to enrich creative industries worldwide.

As Alshar continues to captivate audiences, the project serves as both a technological and cultural milestone. It highlights North Macedonia’s growing role in innovative robotics, and showcases how intelligent systems can complement human creativity to produce futuristic, interactive experiences that inspire, entertain, and educate.
