Historic Debut of Alshar: The AI‑Powered Humanoid DJ Robot Created by Professor Dr. Anis Sefidanis

In a groundbreaking milestone for robotics and artificial intelligence in North Macedonia and the Balkan region, the first humanoid DJ robot, named Alshar, has been unveiled in Ohrid. The robot is the creation of Professor Dr. Anis Sefidanis, renowned for his innovative work in machine intelligence, robotics, and digital humanities. OhridNews+1

The world‑class debut of Alshar took place on the night of September 8, 2024, at the Rebel nightclub in Ohrid, coinciding with North Macedonia’s celebration of its 33rd Independence Day. Alshar, designed in human dimensions and capable of autonomous musical performance, performed as the DJ for a live audience, marking a new era where artificial intelligence intersects with entertainment and cultural expression. Professor Sefidanis, who leads the Faculty of Machine Intelligence and Robotics at the University of Information Science and Technology “St. Paul the Apostle” in Ohrid and is founder of the Sefidanis Research and Development Center, explained that Alshar was conceived as more than just a technical achievement — it represents a fusion of AI, art, and human interaction. The robot integrates cutting‑edge machine learning technologies that enable real‑time music selection, creative composition, and response to audience dynamics. ATV

Unlike traditional DJs, Alshar does not simply play pre‑selected tracks. Utilizing sophisticated AI models, the robot can analyze audience responses and adapt its musical set accordingly, even generating original compositions in real time. During its performance in Ohrid, Alshar blended classic and contemporary electronic music, including works by local artists such as the multimedia group PMG. Trn.mk

The underlying hardware and software stack of Alshar is equally impressive. The robot features multiple onboard computers coordinating movement, sensory processing, and AI logic, paired with one of the most powerful supercomputers available — an Nvidia DGX system — to facilitate its generative music capabilities. The design and build process incorporated both open‑source frameworks like TensorFlow and custom solutions developed in Professor Sefidanis’s laboratory. Klubskascena.hr+1

The name “Alshar” carries local cultural significance, inspired by the iconic Macedonian mining region known for its unique mineral lorandite, reflecting a deep connection between modern technology and national heritage. Радио МОФ

Alshar’s emergence has drawn international curiosity, with digital conferences planned in Italy and Spain — and a growing interest among professional DJs who see potential for collaborative performances that blend human intuition with AI creativity. TV21.mk

The project also stands as a testament to the collaborative effort behind its realization. Engineers, designers, students, and international contributors played roles in its mechanical design, aesthetics, and functional refinement. The robot’s attire, part of the first Macedonian fashion collection designed for humans and robots alike, highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the initiative. Радио МОФ

Alshar is part of a broader portfolio of technological innovations from Sefidanis, including interactive monuments and systems that bridge digital and cultural realms. The success of this project underscores the region’s potential to lead in AI‑driven creative technologies, while amplifying Ohrid’s reputation as a hub of technological and artistic advancement.
